Artist's Statement
I have been a resident of San Antonio since 1981 and met George Cortez shortly after arriving in San Antonio. He and I studied voice with the late Herald Stark, and we became friends and colleagues. I had the opportunity to perform with George on several ocassions. One of which was the first opera produced by the "San Antonio Pocket Opera", now the San Antonio Opera (Mozart's "The Impresario"). Our entire cast gave of our time and ourselves to help opera return to San Antonio because we all loved opera so passionately. I have had the opportunity to perform many times since in leading roles and fundraisers for the San Antonio Opera . I have been a faculty member in the music department of UTSA since 1984 and was awarded a full Professorship in 2003. I perform Faculty recitals annually and continue to perform with Symphony Orchestras and Chamber Ensembles and in concerts across the Southwest. I was inducted into the San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame in 1999 as the Outstanding Woman in the Creative Arts in San Antonio. I have continued to contribute in many different ways in the SA Music and Fine Arts community through my musical involvement in volunteer organizations, in church, and of course through my service to the Dept. of Music and the University (UTSA). Several music supporters gathered together a few years ago to establish an endowed voice scholarship in my name at UTSA. I feel that I have had a large part in continuing the outreach in the SA musical community that George so loved: through my own active performing career, through teaching students to love and to perform opera and art song, and by giving of my talent to the community.
