Artist's Statement
My vision and career work is to create unique concert formats through collaborations between artists of many different disciplines including, dance, visual arts, theater, jazz and others. The musical endeavors I value most in San Antonio are playing in the San Antonio Symphony and producing and performing with Musical Offerings.
As Artistic Director of Musical Offerings since 1989, I have created and produced many innovation individual concerts and concert series including, but not limited to: Jazz Meets Classical-a unique collaboration between jazz and classical musicians now in its 20th Anniversary Season, Music on the Move-a progressive art-to-music concert series at the San Antonio Museum of Art in which I choose music that relates directly to the art and Taste of Tango-featuring an instrumental tango ensemble accompanied by tango dancers. I was a winner of the 2004 Arts and Letters Award presented by the Friends of the Public Library for my contributions to the cultural life of San Antonio.
For over 22 years I have collaborated with hundreds of artists in San Antonio, and I believe I have demonstrated that I am adept at uniting the talents of local artists to create one-of-a kind events. In a review by Diane Windeler, she wrote, “In addition to strong performances, one of the best reasons for the success of Musical Offerings is its interesting programming.”
A grant from the Artist Foundation would enable me to launch a new creative effort- a multi-media work on a level I have not attempted before. While I have extensive experience as an Artistic Director combining various genres and art forms, the project I propose would be even more wide-ranging. This production would combine new text, music and photographs with the ultimate goal of compellingly conveying the richness of the history of San Antonio, South Texas and Mexico.
