Artist's Statement
As a classical singer, it is important to bloom where you are planted. It has been my pleasure to be “planted” in San Antonio since 2005, when I became a voice faculty member at UTSA. My specialty is performing collaborative arts recitals based on a certain theme or time period. This unique approach to the art song recital enables me to include artistic colleagues from other disciplines in the community. My next recital will be “Spewing Gargoyles and Singing Serpents: Vocal Music of the 20th Century.” Dancers from the Alamo Arts Ballet Theatre will perform as I sing a piece for soprano and electronic accompaniment. Other songs will incorporate Powerpoint slides with text and artwork examples. The art gallery adjacent to the recital venue will be open so guests can enjoy the current exhibit. The combination of poetry readings, sung texts, varied instrumental forces, and visuals will produce an exciting performance experience! I enjoy working as a soloist with many ensembles in the area. I also continue to educate and adjudicate young singers in the state. At the global level, I recently organized a successful benefit concert for the non-profit organization “Father Tom’s Kids” of Kisumu, Kenya. I accomplished this by pooling my resources from church, UTSA, and community art connections. Motivated by my love of performing and teaching, I regularly donate to the UTSA Scholarship Fund and to the NATS Intern Program for Young Teachers. Whether it is singing for nursing homes, working with homeschoolers, or planning children’s library outreach concerts, my creative instincts are always working. However, tapping into other creative reservoirs in our community can be costly. This grant will allow me to expand my collaborations with other artists in the community and to continue revitalizing the art song recital in San Antonio.
