ARTIST FOUNDATION OF SAN ANTONIO CALLS FOR APPLICATIONS FOR 2010 GRANTS

afposter2010San Antonio, TX -- September 1, 2010 -- The Artist Foundation of San Antonio (AF) announced today the beginning of its 2010 grant application period. This year, up to eleven (11) $5,000 awards will be made in the categories of Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Literary Arts, Media Arts, Classical Singing, Theatre Set Design and Costume Design. Interested artists can find additional details and apply online at www.artistfound.org or write to info@artistfound.org for more information. The application period will close on October 15, 2010, and awards will be announced in mid November.

Celebrating its fifth consecutive year of awarding individual artist grants, the Foundation has provided nearly $340,000.00 to more than 60 Bexar County artists. "With the support of our dedicated volunteers and generous donors, the Artist Foundation has become an important thread in San Antonio's vibrant arts fabric," says board chair and co-founder Patricia Pratchett. "We've seen a real 'multiplier effect' from these grants: artists create new work, which leads to new shows and exhibits in local galleries, theaters, and music venues, which leads to positive economic impact when local citizens and tourists alike enjoy and consume the art. Additionally, the new works created by these artists improve the quality of our lives and also help establish San Antonio as an arts destination, attracting more and more visitors interested in our arts and culture scene."

The purpose of the Artist Foundation is to identify, recognize and award outstanding San Antonio and Bexar County artists across a broad range of artistic disciplines "The key to the Artist Foundation's success has been to keep their operation lean and laser-focused on their mission" says Bruce Bugg, Tobin Endowment Chairman and funder of the Tobin Grand Prize for Artistic Excellence, a $7500 grant which is awarded to one of the selected artists.

Throughout 2010 the Foundation has held concerts and fundraisers showcasing the work of past awardees. "I was honored to host the Artist Foundation's event at my home this Spring. It was a salon in the classic sense where guests enjoyed a terrific Oaxacan buffet dinner, a visual art show, musical performance, dramatic reading, and artist talk. Without funding from Artist Foundation grants, these works and that evening's event would never have happened," adds James Lifshutz, AF board member and funder of the AF's Lifshutz Award in Visual Arts. "This infusion of original work makes our city bolder, more dynamic and a more interesting place to both live in and visit."

The Artist Foundation will hold it's 4th ArtBall on February 19, 2011 at La Viillita Assembly Bldg. Known as an arts-inspired party where artists and business execs mix and mingle over 'Artinis' and art lovers strive to outbid each other in the art auction, the 2011 event will feature 'Pop Art' as its theme. Guests will experience a sumptuous banquet, lively, creative entertainment and a dressed-up-for-the-occasion La Villita. As for ArtBAll fashion, planners say patrons should be prepared to don their Andy Warhol wigs, sky-high heels, and sequined halter-tops for a Studio 54-inspired celebration. Clinton Wright will Chair the 2011 ArtBall, with Brian and Tracy Curran as Sponsorship Chairs. Honorary Chairs are Henry and Mary Alice Cisneros.
